I've completed small home improvement projects like installing blinds for my windows and installing tile floors, but I've never acted as a general contractor (owner/builder) for any major home improvement construction project like building a pool.

My wife Connie and I came across a local pool company at a home show and they offered a hybrid owner/builder program.  The pool company provided me with a pool design, engineering plans, an outline of the process from start to finish and a few sub-contractors to choose from for each phase of the construction project.  I took the plans to the city and obtained the proper building permits, then I started scheduling the sub-contractors.  The pool company owner also visited the worksite at key points in the process and he addressed any issues that I had with the sub-contractors.

Our pool was completed in about 45 days and overall I had a positive experience.  I saved between 20-30% by being the general contractor.  If you're considering building a pool and you have the time to manage the sub-contractors, I would suggest considering doing a hybrid owner/builder program.  If you would like to ask me questions about my experience, want contact information for the pool company, please contact me via the online inquiry form, click here.
